Learn Russian in Moscow
Learn Russian in Moscow, the capital and largest city in Russia with 10.5 million people. This makes Moscow the most populated city in all of Europe and, accordingly, its influence and pre-eminence in Russia has been immense.
"Moscow" means city by the Moskva river and many of the main sites of interest are on the northern bank. Moscow, like many cities, has major "Ring Roads" that encircle it and represent the growing border of the city over time. While these rings serve to divide up the city into neighbourhoods you will likely use the incredible Metro to get around as you live and learn Russian in Moscow. It is the second most used subway system after Tokyo and is considered a landmark in itself for the varied architecture of its many stations. Get familiar with the transportation system and personalizing your experience in Moscow will be the only thing you will need to think about!

Host Family Accommodation
Host Family
Living with a host family is probably the best and most effective way to become fully immersed into the language and culture of your chosen country. Russia is a country with a basic infrastructure and power or hot water failures are not uncommon; however, famous Russian hospitality will play its part in overcoming most of these problems. Our host families usually live not more than 40 minutes away by public transport. Students have access to all living areas in the house and in most cases, will be expected to share the bathroom.
Room Options:
- Single Room (SR)
- Breakfast only (BB)
- Breakfast and Dinner (HB)
Self Catering Apartments
Our apartments are normally located within the same distance as the host families and are shared with other international students studying at the school. Our apartments are co-ed; however, rooms are shared with the same gender. Apartments are not air conditioned and will be cleaned once every two weeks and after the departure of each student. All apartments have a well equipped kitchen, shared bathroom facilities and living areas. The apartments vary in size and number of bedrooms, depending on the location in the city but expect to share with 2 - 4 other students.
Room Options:
- Single Room (SR)
- Apartments are Self-Catering
Top Highlights: See What Moscow is Famous For
Krasnaya Ploshchad (Red Square)
The site of large May Day parades during the Soviet era and a market before that, Krasnaya ploshchad (Red Square - although krasnaya means 'beautiful' in Old Russian) is a dramatic 700m-long (2300ft) space. It also drew crowds to visit Lenin's Mausoleum - a cubic, Russian avant-garde structure with a crystal casket containing the preserved body of the Soviet Union's founder. The square is dominated by the walls and towers of the Kremlin on one side and the facade of the GUM department store on the other.
Pokrovsky Sobor (St Basil's Cathedral)
The surrounding buildings provide a frame for Russia's most famous image - the multicoloured onion domes of Pokrovsky Sobor (Cathedral of the Intercession, better known as St Basil's Cathedral). Each dome has distinctive patterning and colours and the effect of the ensemble is stunning. It was built in the 1550s, to commemorate Ivan the Terrible's victory over the Mongols at Kazan.
Kremlin
The heart of Moscow and of the Russian State itself, the Kremlin (literally meaning 'fortified town') is a walled fortress dating back to the city's founding in 1147 (although the oldest extant walls and churches date from the 15th and 16th centuries). From 1276 to 1712, it was the seat of government for the grand princes and tsars, from 1918 to the present, the Communist government. The red-brick walls and towers enclose a number of churches and palaces and, once past the soviet-era Palace of Congresses, the visitor will find a pleasing ensemble around the main square. Also within the Kremlin are the Tsar Cannon and Tsar Bell, both the largest of their kind (40 and 200 tonnes, respectively) and neither one used for its intended purpose.
